We urgently need change at Port Phillip Council.
That’s the message from a packed audience of more than 100 residents at the Middle Park Bowling Club last week for the launch of the Progressive Port Phillip policy platform.
The evening was headlined by speakers on the:
- Campaign to save community early learning and care centres from being sold by Council (Laura Hill);
- Recent Council decision to privatise in-home aged care services (Martin Kingham), and
- Need for an ambitious local climate and environment plan given the threat of climate change and sea level rise affecting homes, businesses and neighbourhoods in Port Phillip (Justin Halliday).
A key theme on the night was a need for a Council that works for the whole Port Phillip community in all its diversity.
There was strong support for retaining and growing our community services through public ownership and accountability. No more privatisation of services and assets.
The audience called for real action and investment on the local environmental and climate challenges facing us now and into the future.
And for a Council focus on improving housing affordability and security by partnering with the state government and community sector to grow social housing stock and advocating for better renters rights.
The self-interested political divisions that have dogged this Council term must end. A Council that genuinely engages all of us in new and innovative ways of making decisions is urgently needed.
Over the coming months, Progressive Port Phillip will:
- Convene local neighbourhood meetings in our new nine wards
- Reach out to civil society & business stakeholders
- Run campaigns on key issues
- Conduct leaflet, billboard and poster publicity
- Design and host progressive candidate workshops covering key issues
- Work with those candidates who affirm the Progressive Policy Platform to encourage a team approach for change.
There is clearly a strong momentum for change.
But we can only make change with your skills, time and financial support.
